Recently at Elwood, we had wine and food writer, Mike Madaio, come in and give a talk on the history of the Mt. Penn region. The German immigrants that settled in the Reading area in the nineteenth century created a wine and food mecca that attracted visitors from all over the U.S.
Mike explained how the hotels, trains, and resorts, plus a love of wine and food, brought an acclaim to the region while guests at Elwood lunched on dishes from old hotel menus- Cream of Tomato Soup, Hasenpfeffer, German picnic plate, and Peach Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream.
